James Butcher

I see supervision as a conversation with three questions in mind:

  • How do I make sure my coaching is effective, ethical, and safe?
  • How am I developing as a coach?
  • How am I looking after myself as a coach?

Sometimes those questions are best explored through a coaching conversation, sometimes through mindful reflection – and both have their place in the supervision I offer. And while the focus of supervision will often be the “how” of coaching, I recognise that the foundation of effective coaching lies in the relationship we develop with our coachees, the quality of the presence we bring to our coaching conversations, and our capacity for reflection and self-awareness – and these too are central to my approach to supervision.

Experience and Development

I have been coaching for over twenty years, and have worked with senior executives at Arup, PwC, Coca Cola, AT Kearney, Telefonica, and across the Civil Service, local government and the NHS. For the last four years I was part of the team providing an on-call resilience and wellbeing coaching service for NHS primary care staff.

I offer supervision to individuals and groups, working with developing coaches as part of a faculty supporting an ILM-accredited coach training programme, as well as with more established coaches.

Specialisms in Supervision

I’m keen to help coaches integrate different methodologies and frameworks into their developing practice, to bring their values and sense of purpose to the centre of how they work, and to develop their systemic perspective – seeing each coachee in the complexity of their social and organisational context.

Interest Outside of Coaching

Outside of my coaching and supervision work, I run a small community sustainability project, participate in a poetry performance group, and was recently elected a district councillor, as part of the group running my local council.
