Post-Qualification CPD
Your CPD Journey Post Qualification
Still Becoming a Coach!
Staying up-to-date with your CPD once you have qualified takes discipline and dedication to your craft. It should be fun, enjoyable and stimulating – this thinking is at the heart of CoachingCraft and the Community of Practice we are seeking to develop.
We have put together a programme of events and resources that can form a cornerstone of your professional development. Our model of development uses a number of metaphors to create a learning and development framework that can be tailored to what you need for your practice, no matter what context or how experienced you are.
The Quest – Front Stage and Back Stage
We see the learning journey as a Quest – and on quests you hold a ‘question’, something you are working with. In fact, we think there are three questions.
Using the idea of “Front Stage” and “Back Stage” from American Sociologist Irving Goffman:
- The “Front Stage” Question – WAIT, or why am I talking?
- The “Back Stage” Question – What kind of a coach am I becoming?
- The transition question as we move from back to front stage to perform the role of coach – “How am I turning up?” or perhaps more significantly, “What’s my purpose now?”
We think that there are 10 areas of skills and practice that can be identified to support the quest, or in progressing those key questions.
We find these 10 labelled areas, or ‘Dials on the Dashboard’, to be a useful way of organising the areas for study and your development throughout our programmes – indeed, throughout your entire development journey as a coach.
We present them here to give you an overview of the comprehensive nature of the CoachingCraft agenda. Note the inclusion of the input on developing a viable professional practice, which is often missing in programmes of this type. We will support you in developing a viable coaching practice, whatever that means for you.
The 10 Dials – Front Stage
1. Contracting
Developing a clear contract with the coachee, client and wider client system, and understanding client context.
2. Presence and Core Skills
How you show up for the client, pre-planning, preparation, and being present. Establishing trust and safety and the coaching mindset, making use of the coaching approach, models, questioning skills, creative listening, challenge and presence.
3. Interventions
Skill, quality, breadth and range of your interventions. We will use the Gallery model, GROW, OSKAR to provide insights as well as looking at ‘agile’ coaching, mentoring, performance coaching and being a ‘champion’.
4. Ethical Practice
Global ethical codes, ethical practice, boundaries, supervision, how they are integrated into creating an ethical coaching practice.
5. Reflective Practice
Skill of reflection on one’s work, coaching logs, use of supervision and supervision models – the cornerstone of effective coach development.
6. Outcomes
How do you know it’s worked? We look at endings, evaluation, gathering client feedback and when are the right times to properly review and reflect on what has been achieved, and maybe what hasn’t.
The 10 Dials – Back Stage
7. Psy Expert
What is your sense of self as a coach? We coach from who we are, so we’ll encourage you to reflect upon what you regard as your coaching philosophy, the purpose of coaching and the processes you use (the Three ‘P’s). You will gain insight into your strengths and ‘growing edge’, and hone your unique coaching signature style.
8. Systems Thinking
The network coach – your work and the client is always set in a context. What’s the relationship of self and practice with wider, systemic issues e.g. climate, ethnicity, equality, diversity, etc? We also consider organisation complexity, systems leadership and team coaching.
9. CPD and Professional Recognition
Your progress in achieving recognised accreditation qualifications, coaching body memberships and your continuing professional development plan. Here we specifically support you with free access during your programme to CoachingCraft, our Community of Practice for all coaches. With regular CPD, supervision and other events this vibrant group can form a basis for your future development.
10. Your Coaching Practice
Viability, progress of finding, planning and executing hours required for your qualification. Then, attracting, developing and keeping appropriate clients, your coaching practice / business model suitable to you.
